A Season For Change

Re-Envisioning Our Farm

With all of it’s trials and tribulations, last year presented the perfect opportunity to reflect on our lives, to appreciate the things we often take for granted (like our health and wellfare) and to recalibrate our dreams, goals and the footprint we want to leave behind. I’ve been silent without posting for the past six months because my best thinking is done in my head, not out loud. During this time, I’ve made some tough decisions in planning a course for the future of our farm. I’ve always been one to want to try a little bit of everything and I often take on too much. It’s not easy for me to scale back, but I’d much rather do one or two things really well than a bunch of things half-ass! So, I’ve decided to cut way back on our produce production and focus our efforts on flower farming, where my true passion lies.

We apologize to all of our former produce share customers but hope you will consider trying one of our flower shares. We will still have some produce for sale at our farmer’s markets, along with our farm-made goodies and apothecary items (more on that later) as well as for farm-to-table dinners on our farm (stay tuned!).

Featured Flowers

Here’s a peek at what’s going in the ground this week! We’re investing heavily in perennial flowers and shrubs this year. In fact, we’re dedicating a whole field to the cause! We’re expecting a beautiful and plentiful return on our investment as these plants will continue to provide beautiful blooms year-after-year with our love and care.

Baptisia - Purple Smoke.jpeg

Baptisia

Also known as False Indigo, this colorful perennial is native to the Midwest, which may be why I love it so much. We’re planting hundreds of baptisia plants this week in shades of yellow and purple. Baptisia is one of the hardest working plants on our farm. It delivers tall beautiful stems full of blooms in the spring and then we are able to continue harvesting the seed pods and foliage throughout the summer and fall.

Agapanthus White.jpeg

Agapanthus

We also received a shipment of Agapanthus rhizomes (fancy word for root). This African Lily is native to South Africa and is often grown as a house plant but we think it makes a fantastic cut flower with its long stem and flamboyant white or purple flower pods. We’re planting these around our pool and show garden, where we can protect them over the winter months

Eremurus.jpg

Eremurus

Foxtail Lily is another showy perennial going in our pool and show garden this week. We’ve decided to plant them there for protection from the wind. These tall colorful flower spikes are also often called desert candles and are a dream for designers looking for a unique and stunning addition to tall arrangements. In the language of flowers, Eremurus symbolizes endurance.

New on the Farm

There’s a lot of exciting projects taking place on our farm this spring. Our first hoop house is going up now and I hope to be planting in it by the end of the week. We’re bringing in truckloads of top quality soil and compost for growing. This unheated hoop house will allow us to extend our growing season and offer plants earlier in the spring and later in the fall. The first crops going in are crated tulips and lilies as well as ranunculus, anemones, sweet peas, snapdragons and many other beauties.
